PAST PUPPIES

We are very proud of the way all of our past Springer puppies have turned out and truly enjoy getting updates from their new families!

All Puppies were sired by CH PC Dakota Pines 1, CH MN Whispering Pines One Over Par (Bogey) or CH Wood Lake's Edison.

                             Angel

    Gracie/Dakota Pines I  2008 spring pup

Congratulations Angel & Sherry

From the time Sherry & Gary picked this gorgeous little girl in 2008 to be a part of their family Sherry had therapy dog in mind. Angel is one of Gracie & Dakota's puppies from their 1st litter. We are very proud of Angel & Sherry's accomplishments and hope they continue to teach the kids. Please read on for more details on the very important volunteer work that Angel & Sherry have been giving back to their community.

Hi Sally--
Angel started working with kids this past fall.  She is such a sweetheart.  We get lots of comments on how well behaved she is and on how pretty she is.  She goes to the school in the pictures every week. At that school she reads with kindergartners, 1st graders and 2nd graders.  She also works with the early childhood kids to help them learn their positional words (in front of, next to, behind, etc).  These aren't the best of pictures--I didn't notice till I got home that I had my camera on the wrong setting. (Senior moment)
Angel does so well with the kids.  She has a blanket to sit on and as soon as it goes down, she knows it is time to go to work.  The kids love her.  She will sit like this for as long as we wish, however we usually go a half hour at a time.  She is at the school for about 2 hours.  She also goes to another school every other week and works with 4th graders at that school.  I can't begin to tell you how patient she is with the kids--even when they swarm around her in the hallway!  If she gets uncomfortable (which is in the early childhood room when all 14 kids want to pet her at once!)  she will let me know by looking at me with a "get me out of here" look. That is the only  time she shows any discomfort.  We had to stay out of the school when H1N1 went thru. After checking with with my health insurance hotline, it turned out that Angel could pass the flu from one child to the next.  If a child had the flu and kissed her (which all the little girls like to do) or petted her, the next child to touch her could pick up the germs off her coat.  It turns out the germs could live on her coat for 8 hours.  We avoided the schools till everyone got healthy again.
If any of your other puppies are living with retired teachers, I encourage them to to consider using their babies as volunteer listeners.  I would be happy to correspond on how to get started and provide them with websites that show the benefits of dogs as listeners.  It is so great for the kids. And Angel and I are really enjoying it.
The school is ok if you wish to use  our pictures on your website.  I haven't used any names except for the little boy whose Mom gave me permission to use him. I hope you enjoy the pictures--Angel has grown into a beautiful little lady who performs a very important service.  Thanks again for our "Angel"!

Winnie

Lacy/Dakota Pines I  2010 Litter

Hi Sally and Erin-
Thanks for your email.  Winnie is doing great, and loves exploring and playing outside... she is being remarkably good with all the Christmas decorations... as of yet no ornaments have been used as chew toys!  She is a beautiful girl and received many compliments from the vet (that should be passed on to you both), saying that she definitely came from great breeding lines.  She is very smart and has "mastered" come and sit.  Housebreaking has been going very well (knock on wood).  Seeing how she negotiates the stairs is very funny- she pretty much slides on her tummy down, .
Some pictures are attached from last few weeks.  She weighs 17 pounds as of today.

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas!

Allison

                   Peach & Tom

               Shelby Rae/Dakota  2006 litter

Hi Sally:

Peach is doing just plain awesome.  We had a nice hunting season.  Didn't shoot a lot of birds but Peach worked beautifully for both pheasant and ruffed grouse.  Ruffs are more my preference but most likely I will take her to SD next year for pheasants and hunt some of the areas around here.  We have some work to do on retrieving but I am not concerned.  She quarters nicely and is so pleasant to be with on the hunt.  Two hours of running and she is hardly breathing hard.  Lots of stamina.  I'm not the best dog trainer but at this point she is doing everything I need and she is exceedingly eager to please.  Once she learns something it sticks.  There is never a need to scold or use force.  In fact she is quite sensitive which I like.  I've never laid a hand on her and don't ever intend to.  The fact that she is somewhat sensitive with people is interesting since when she is around other dogs she becomes alpha female immediately.  She wants to play with every dog and she wants to be the boss of the play period.  She responds best to affection and praise in every situation I've encountered so far.  She doesn't chase deer but she almost seems like she would like to play with them and she doesn't quite understand why they run away from her.  She watches them out the window and wags her stubby little tail.  I don't have any other pictures other than the two I sent you (Peach and I and pheasants and then one with a Ruff).  I did send them didn't I? Spring is springing around these parts right now so its time to get the tick gunk out and the heartworm meds (oh joy).  Attached is a picture of her today.  She just got a haircut and is lookin' hot.

Best,

Tom, Gail, and Miss Peach

                       Updated picture 12/ 2011

        Gracie/Dakota 2010 litter & Shelby Rae/Dakota fall 2009 litter

Hi Sally and Rick.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  We have finally put in the mail your nail grinder.  Jerry has made it so it will run when you plug it in and to stop it just turn down the speed control and  unplug and you are good.  He had to eliminate the switch and so it is always on.  Hope this ok for you.

Baylee and Maggie are the most awesome dogs we have ever had. Maggie is still a little freak about going to bed.  She still starts nagging at about 8:30 and persists until I let her out and then I say want to go nite nite and she takes off like a bullet for the bedroom and her cage.  Growl barking all the way and if I'm not fast enough she comes back into the living room and barks at me.  The minute she is in her cage she is quiet and sleeps till morning.  She is quiet the character.  Baylee is the sweetest most docile Springer we have ever known.  He is just a lover.  Jerry,  most evenings, has a dog blanket.  Baylee at the foot of the recliner on his legs and Maggie across his stomach.  When one of them gets hot then they come lay by me on the couch.  Maggie also has a baby, its a stuffed pink weiner puppy.  She has had it since we brought her home, she goes into her cage everyday and brings it out and drops it in the family room so she can be near it.  Today we were looking for it and couldn't find it until Jerry went looking for it and found it under his pillow.  She has put toys between our pillows but not under one. She is so funny.   I must Thank you again for the joy we receive from these two pups.  They make us smile all the time.  Sending a pic of the most gorgeous dogs in town.  lol

Again,  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and we will stop in the Spring.

Take care

           Casey @ 1 year  and Hunter @ 5 months

        Annie/Dakota's 2009 litter --  Shelby/Dakota's 2009 litter

Hi Sally!

Hunter and Casey are both doing very well.  I can't believe we've had Casey for a year and that Hunter is 5 months old now!  Time goes too fast but we hare having such a good time with them.  Both are terrific dogs.  Last weekend Casey went with the family sledding and had so much fun running up and down the hills.  This weekend we went ice fishing and took Hunter.  He is still as mellow as you said he was!  He is so sweet and laid back.  Easy to train because he just wants to please.  So much like mama Shelby.  Casey is a bright dog too and just gorgeous and we will be heading to advanced obedience classes soon.  Hunter is going on to the beginning obedience.   Casey has more devil in him than Hunter but both are amazing animals!  They have been such a wonderful addition to our family and we cannot Thank You enough! They adore each other and Hunter follows Casey all around the yard!

Hi Sally!

Winston is doing incredibly well, he is my best bud, and we couldn't be happier with him.  Clifford (our black lab) and Winston are inseparable.  We had a very fun first Christmas with him and I attached some pictures!  My parents got a new camera, so they took a lot of pictures, and Winston seemed to be center stage of most :)  Hope you are having a wonderful holiday and best of luck with the upcoming litters!!

                  Axle            and        Sir Oliver

       Bailey/Dakota 2011         Annie/Dakota 2010 litter

Hi Sally,

So sorry it took so long to send you a puppy update, and get some pictures off to you.  Unfortunately my computer was down for a while.

Axle is a joy!  He and Olie get along tremendously.  They are inseparable.  We have spent hours watching the two of them interact, and play.  They are typical siblings, with Olie teasing Axle all of the time.  Olie will have a ball, stick or frisbee and bring it just close enough to Axle that Axle has to jump for it. We watch Axle getting ready for the big attack.  He gets into a crouch formation with his tail sticking straight up.  He stands very still, and when he feels the time is right, will pounce!  This is when Olie takes the toy and runs!  The chase is on!  Now that Axle is getting a little bigger and faster, he has once in a while succeeded, only to have Olie take the toy from him again.  The game continues!

Axle is very intelligent.  He sits, stays (although only for a short period of time), and when you say "kennel" he goes running, sits in his kennel and awaits his treat.  He is doing really well with coming when called, as long as there are no distractions!  He was sleeping through the night by night number 2 which was awesome for me!  If all is quiet in the house he will sleep until 8:30 in the morning!

Axle loves the lake, and has already been swimming.  He will retrieve sticks from the water, and loves to hide in the long grass to "attack" an unsuspecting Olie.  If he goes in the bush, we send Olie to get him.  It works.  Olie runs in, locates, and both of them come running back!

I have attached pictures.  Hopefully they have come through.  If not, let me know and I will resend.

Take care,
Kara

                             Annie Grace

                           Lacy/Dakota 2010 litter

Hi Sally

Latest picture of Annie Grace.  She is getting so big, and is such a
great puppy.  She now knows sit, shake, down and is learning stay and
doing wonderfully at it.  Tim is very impressed at how smart she is.
We are enjoying her immensely she is such a joy!  She is also very
dominate,  when you read about dominate dogs and their habits she is at
the top of the list (That little tail of hers is up all the time), we
are learning a lot also on how to handle her and teach her that we are
the boss not her it's funny, I'm sure that you would laugh at us, as you
know we like to spoil our dogs!   Just wanted you to know that all is
well and I will try to send more pictures of her soon, I want to get
some good ones of her outside.     Thank you once again for all of your
great work with her in the beginning of her life, I know it made a huge
difference.   We also need to call Erin soon - I would love to get Annie
and Ace together just to see how they interact.

Talk soon

Hope you are having a great year!!

Zoot is out of Lacy/Dakota's 2010 litter

Hi Sally,

Zoot marched in for his last 'puppy visit' at the vet's today had his shots and his microchip implanted..not a whimper. He's lean and tall at 28 lbs.  This guy is so laid back, a lover boy and, a pleasure to work with having learned his basic commands and beginning retrieving and oh, he falls asleep when he's being blow-dryed...Ha!. Zootie has been completely 'house-broken' now for about 2 weeks...might have been sooner if he could have gotten mom and dad 'house-broken' so we wouldn't forget that he has a puppy bladder connected to a puppy brain.  Zoot and Burk have a ball together...best 'buds' and, even at half the weight of Burk...'Zoot gives as good as he gets'.  He just needs to realize that he can't do everything Burk does like jump up on the picnic table...but he tries.  Anyway, THANK YOU MN Whispering Pines Springer's, Erin and Sally.  We love our precious boys.

                  Kirby (AKA Dublin)

                    Annie/Bogey's 2011 litter

Hi Sally,

The pup formally known as Dublin (remember "the artist formally known as Prince") is now Kirby.  He just didn't respond at all to Dublin.  I know that dogs hear certain sounds better than others so I tried a number of names and finally landed on Kirby.  He responded immediately.  (And he sucks down his food like a vacuum).

He is great.  I think he is going to be the spitting image of his daddy.  He sleeps all night in the crate in my bedroom and he is doing extremely well on potty training.  I have some large bells on the back door and last weekend he was nosing those bells, I let him out and he went potty.  Of course he may have just been playing with the bells and he always goes potty when he goes out, but I am ever the optimist.   He has had very few accidents and one on purpose.  He was mad at me.  I shut him in the enclosed porch on the back of the house while I mowed.  I guess he wanted to supervise.

I am not sure if my toes are going to survive those little razor sharp teeth.  He thinks they are fat sausages for him to chew on.   So I got the brilliant idea of spraying "Bitter Apple" on my feet to see if that helped.  And it did.......for about a minute and half.  Guess the taste must not stay on absorbent surfaces.  (Never thought I would refer to my feet as an absorbent surface).......

He got a clean bill of health at the vets.  2nd round of shots tomorrow.  When I went to the vet after he got here, the biggest pit bull I have ever seen came over to him and stuck his face up to Kirby.  Kirby yawned and didn't even react.  Just sat very quietly on my lap.  He does seem rather fearless.  (Don't know if that is a good thing) That big pit (90 lbs at least) got down on the floor with his but up in the air wanting Kirby to play......... You could tell he was really mild temperament.  But they put me on edge when I am around them.

He doesn't seem to fear unexpected noises.  Mowers, backfires, sweeper, blow dryer,  he just kind of stands alert for a minute then back to playing.  Now if I could find a way for him to not be right under my feet.  I am scared to death I am going to step on him.  Right now we are in conflict as to who is the first out the door.  I am winning but it is a slim margin.  The little guy is fast.  Glad the yard is fenced.

The first few days here, he was willing to sit with me in the recliner and we would take a nap.  Days of the recliner naps have left the building.  Kirby has far too many things to see about than sit in the recliner with me and take a nap.    Sigh...............................

That is a quick update.  Bottom line is he is super, he is loved and he is happy in spite of his foot fetish..................

Have a good week.  We are getting ready for a cold front, which unfortunately means highs of 83...............sigh........I miss the cold and the snow!

Marilyn

                                Shelby/Dakota Fall 2009 litter

Hi Sally and Erin,

My father used to say, “you only get one good dog in your lifetime”.

Thankfully, he was wrong.  It seems that every dog we’ve had was “special”.  We loved them all, laughed with them and cried with them when their time was up.  I must say however, that Burk has been a shining star among all the other stars.  At a little less than six months, he has charmed (sometimes forcing) his way into all our lives.  None of us, it seems, can remember “Life Before Burk”…and really don’t want to.

In late January, Burk and I were on a long trek near Turkey Hollar, glassing turkey and deer, browsing and bedded down in the cedar thickets and Live Oak motts. The sky was steel gray, the temperature dropping as "sleet" peppered my canvas jacket like No. 4’s. We were about 4 miles from the house in thick bush, the flat light and near white-out making orientation a little iffy.  I had not taken my GPS that morning so wasn’t really sure where we were.  In fact, I was contemplating calling Barb to pick us up at Winter Mill, a much shorter walk to the south…or what I thought was south.  That’s when I discovered my cell phone and billfold had somehow “grown legs” and jumped out of my coat pocket.

I have always let Burk take the lead back to the house… with the command “home”.  He would, in general, follow our outbound track…but, on his own backtrack.  I kept repeating “home” and “find it” as I staggered through the brush, occasionally coming across our tracks from earlier in the day.  Imagine my surprise when after about 45 minutes, Burk came trotting up to me, tail going a mile a minute… with my wallet … no worse for the wear, albeit a little slobbery.  And, as I was inspecting his “find”…off he went and came back with my cell phone…Ha!

A big THANKS again from Jane, Barb and me, knee deep in the Hill Country of Texas.

 Kind Regards,

 Cap Horning

PS We are seriously thinking about a companion for Burk…maybe a little girl this time.  I can assure you, we will be coming back to you guys at Whispering Pines.  Good luck in March... you'll need it!

 Hi Sally,

Sassy is very shy. She loves here lap time, she likes to curl up and take a snooze and she is very loving. She also loves to go out in the field where she can run!  Most the time we have to bring her out of the fields so she will stop. We love her so much!!!

Hi Sally,

Just wanted to send a few photos of what Josie has been up to.
She continues to be just a terrific addition to the family - we love her joyfulness, her sense of humor, her gentleness and her occasional mischief that never fails to make us laugh.  What a blessing she is!

Hope that spring finds you and your family well!

                           Henry

              Lacy/Dakota's 2010 litter

Dear Sally:  I hope you and Erin are doing well. I still follow your website and all the wonderful dogs and puppies. I am attaching some pictures of Henry, from early puppy until this summer. Thanks very much for the birthday card and all of the follow-up that you do on your pups. It is very kind and appreciated. I cannot believe Henry is a year old! Henry is a beautiful and wonderful dog and dubbed the Mayor of Annapolis. He has good pals at the local school and courthouse and more than a few neighborhood pubs. He loves playing in the field.  He has many "hunting instincts" that seem to be good manners too-if he sees a dog or person he lays down and waits for them to come to him. I have been told this is "pointing"?   He is the master of the play bow and he loves other dogs and people and is quite social. Henry is a very calm dog too so a little different from my last Springer who was happily but sometimes chaotically exuberant. He has the run of the whole house but likes his crate/house for day naps which still has his blanky from when he traveled by plane from Minnesota! He sometimes likes to sleep under the bed at night but comes up in to the bed in  the early hours. He is a cuddler and a leaner. I did get Henry neutered after considerable thought. He also has passed all physicals with flying colors, including his eye exam. He is 58 lbs and the vet thinks he may pass 60lbs. Henry is health and happy. Now that he is a year old he can go to agility school and be certified to visit hospitals and nursing homes. He is eager to do things and go places so he keeps me busy. There are many hunters and hunt clubs in Maryland and I wonder if it is sensible to see if a hunter had any interest in training Henry to hunt. Your thoughts on that idea would be interesting to consider.

Best wishes for a restful Fall and wonderful holiday season.

Take care, Katie, Annapolis, MD.

            Tanner  1st Grouse @ 6 mon.

              Bailey/Edison's  2010 litter

Hi Sally,

Just sending a note to brag about Tanner.    Got his first grouse yesterday.   We kept Willow at cabin and Mark just took Tanner for a walk in the hopes of getting him to put up his first grouse.   Well it all worked well and they got their first grouse together.    At 6 months and 13 days we think that is awesome.    He didn't make the best retrieve but he found it and picked it up and ran all over the place with his prize possession.     So just wanted to send you a note to tell how wonderful we think he is going to be.......12 gauge right over him and he had no problem with that.

                                    Thatcher Blue

               Bailey/CH Dakota Pines I  2011litter

Hi Sally---Little Thatcher had his vet visit this morning, and got started on Heartgard and Frontline Plus.  He met several children in the waiting room, and loved being petted by them.  My vet was very impressed with him!  He thought he was gorgeous and healthy, and commented that he must have been "well socialized by the breeder".  Thatcher was cheerful and calm about being handled by a stranger.  I suppose some pups are hyper or scared---not this little guy!
One more thing---besides how much I love him---I don't know if you must have started housetraining already?  He hasn't had a single accident, nor even looked like he was thinking about it.  We do go out often, and he already knows the word "out" it seems!  Today he went to the door by himself, and made a noise--not a bark, but sort of an excited noise, and I let him out immediately.  He ran right over to the grass and did his big business.  Amazing!!  Maybe just circumstance, but it sure seemed intentional to ask to go out!   And he slept through the night last night---not a peep!

Whatever you've done with these pups, it sure is wonderful.  He's happy and bouncy and learning so quickly.  I can see that my kitchen chair legs and the cabinet knobs might be a big temptation!!!---but mostly he goes after his own toys and brings them to me.  He even climbs into his open crate all by himself to catch a snooze.

Thank you so much--I couldn't be happier, and it seems that Thatcher Blue feels that way too!
Sara

                             Barney

               Gracie/Dakota Pines I 2010 litter

Hi Sally,

We think of you often and are so blessed with our not so little Barney, he is 42lbs now and not at all fat. To think he was the last born maybe he wouldn't of been big, not the case. He is the best puppy! just a little lover and so very smart! He loves the snow and cold weather and romps and plays with a huge ball as long as I can tolerate the cold. It took a couple of weeks for his older brother Bailey to get used to him and now they are great pals, the old man(11yrs)at times has to put him in his place as he gets tired faster. We had him neutered the end of Nov. and he did great! He also went through obedience 1 class and he was the baby of the pack so really just learned to be with older dogs, we work everyday on commands and he understands without much correction, like I said so smart! The one thing we have trouble with is he loves rabbit pellets, I'm sure they cant taste like his Charlie bear treats but he must think so. (yuck). Thank you again for the best puppy we love him so much! We will visit this summer and hope you will be just as proud as we are of him. Randy & Becky

amount we love her. Happy 5 month birthday Violet!

Sally-
Hi!  I want to first start off by apologizing for not getting you an update sooner!  Barkley is doing great!  He is spoiled rotten and has been a wonderful addition to our family.  He is housetrained, and can sit and shake on command.  He is very smart and knows how to work us over!! Ha! He spends a lot of time playing in the yard and is becoming a great walking companion.  He is already trying to chase birds!  We get so many comments on how beautiful his coloring is and how well mannered he is.  We always let everyone know where we adopted him from and how great it was to work with you!  My nephew has fallen pretty hard for Barkley so much so, that when my aunt wanted to show him her dog, he told her matter of factly, "No thank you, I have Barkley, I don't need to pet any other dog!!"  Man were we rolling when we heard that one!  (He is only 3 1/2!)  All in all things are well and summer is going way to fast!  Hope all is well with you and your family!  I am enclosing a pictures that I just took a day or two ago.  I will try to send more!  He has had great vet visits and is 25# now!  Again so sorry I didn't respond sooner...
Take Care,

Harley

   Gracie/Dakota's  2008 litter

Hi Sally -

We had a great time today! Harley is really an incredible dog. You should have seen her work. We went to some private property in Le Sueur County today for a half day of hunting. Harley got her first Pheasant on her own. I shot it at about 100 yards. Long shot. HUUUUUGE Rooster. It's going to taste great tomorrow and then going deer hunting on Friday in Taylors Falls. I've never shot a deer but had a chance to smoke a baby one last year on the last day of the season. No way Hos'e. My first dear is going to have a nice rack on it. Hopefully a mounter. We'll see. There is a big boy in those woods. My buddies got a glimpse of him last fall.

Let me know if the image I attached came through. If not, I will figure out another way to send it to you. Keep up the great work. When I hunt with others......they are very impressed with Harley's incredible work ethic, obedience and kind demeanor. It's really fun to watch. We had 4 guys hunting today. Too bad the other ones didn't get anything ;) LOL.....I drove and brought the dogs. So that bird I shot was solely mine. Tracker and Harley perfectly compliment each other in the field. Fun to watch. You should have seen Harley Grouse hunting a few weeks ago. You cannot teach what she was doing. You can help but nothing like how she works the field and the woods. Hard to explain via email.

Have a great weekend,

Chad
